3 Ways to Stay on Top of Your Game in College

By Anastasia Mann

College can get a bit overwhelming amid juggling your busy class schedule, working your job, and actively participating in student organizations. At times you might feel as if you are being pulled in every direction and that there’s no way to efficiently manage all of your obligations. With so many places to be and countless deadlines to meet, how will you handle what seems like a never-ending list of responsibilities?

Pencil It In

Meet your new best friend: a planner. Buying a planner is just as important to purchase as your class textbooks. Your life will be filled with chaos without one. Keeping a planner is essential so you can schedule in your class exams, work schedule, club meetings, and other appointments that are important to remember. Try to make a habit of writing down a due date or appointment the moment that you are informed about it, that way it won’t slip your mind. Planners are also useful for storing passwords. The next time you register for a website whether it’s for educational or personal purposes, write down the username and password you used in your planner so that when you visit the website again, you won’t have to click on the “Forgot Password” button and go through the annoying process of making a new password.

The Handy Syllabus

That pesky class syllabus your teacher lectures about on the first day of class can be a lot more useful than you may think. Print out a copy of the syllabus for each class you are taking and put them in a readily accessible place like your desk or backpack and you will be amazed at how organized and informed you will be. Not only is it helpful for clarifying assignment details and due dates, it also generally includes the grading scale for the class which will be useful when it’s the end of the semester and you are scrambling to calculate what you need to make on your final exam to get your hands on that highly sought after “A”.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Manage your time wisely. Make sure to give yourself ample time to get to class and other appointments. By managing your time properly, there allows for plenty of time to complete tasks so that you are not trying to cram too much into one day. It’s important to not be rushing around all the time because eventually you will get burned out and unfocused which could potentially make you over-sleep for an important occasion or force you to make a costly error. Remember, you never get another chance to make a good first impression, so handle your time wisely so that you arrive at appointments in a timely manner.
