The Influence of Technology on the English Language

ULearn School in Dublin has produced a clever interactive timeline that allows you to view images and videos of some of the inventions that have helped to shape the English language, as well as providing information on some of the changes that have taken place in the language because of these technological advancements.

For example, you will learn that prior to the invention of the telephone, the term “hello” was used not to greet someone but to draw attention to something. (As in “Hello, what do we have here?”)

While there are those who argue that the influence of technology has “dumbed down” the English language, others say a language that does not evolve is a dying language.
